Amazon has pushed an update for its Alexa iOS app today with two notable accessibility-focused improvements – support for the iOS system wide dark/light mode setting as well as compatibility with Apple's system wide Dynamic Type feature.

Alexa for Mac is always ready to play your favourite music, provide weather and news updates, answer questions, create lists, and much more. Alexa's brain is in the cloud, so she continually learns and adds more functionality over time. The more you use Alexa, the more she adapts to your speech patterns, vocabulary, and personal preferences. Reported by Stephen Aquino for Forbes, the two valuable changes came with Amazon Alexa version 2.2.401007.0 for iPhone and iPad today. Amazon only lists 'Various bug fixes and performance improvements' for the build but it features a switch from the previous darkish blue default UI to now respecting the iOS system setting for dark/light mode. Stephen notes this will be appreciated by some with visual impairments.

The other big change is official support for Apple's Dynamic Type feature. That allows users to set a system wide text size that works across iOS apps. Here's how Stephen describes the benefits of this support:

The accessibility benefits are twofold: The Alexa app is more accessible for users who need considerably larger text, and they needn't have to adjust text size in the app itself any longer because Dynamic Type bows to a user's global setting. This is not only a feature of convenience for visually impaired users, it also helps those with fine-motor and/or atypical cognition. Having to tediously go through every app on one's device(s) to alter text size requires a lot of excess tapping, as well as increases cognitive load for people who may have trouble remembering where and how to tweak the setting.

The Amazon Alexa app is a free download from the App Store for iPhone and iPad.

Meet Alexa, Amazon's cloud-based voice service that can be used to control all kinds of devices — even MusicCast products!

MusicCast is a wireless multi-room audio system built into many Yamaha AV receivers, sound bars and wireless speakers. It allows the devices to be connected through your home Wi-Fi® network and controlled by an app on your smartphone or tablet. Now, with Alexa, you can kick back on your couch and ask to play music on your MusicCast AV receiver without lifting a finger.

Alexa lives in the cloud, so it's always getting smarter, adding new capabilities that are delivered to your device automatically. Using Alexa on your MusicCast product is simple and hands-free — just ask, and Alexa will respond instantly. For example, crank up the music in your kitchen by asking, 'Alexa, turn up the volume in the Kitchen.' (Or 'Living room,' etc.)

Skills

Alexa provides capabilities (called 'skills') that enable customers to create a more personalized experience. You can download skills from the Alexa Skills store, or simply by saying 'Alexa, enable [skill name].' Since they are cloud-based and don't take up space on your device, there's no limit to the number of skills you can enable. There are two Alexa skills that work with MusicCast: the MusicCast Smart Home skill and the MusicCast skill.

The MusicCast Smart Home skill lets you use standardized Alexa commands for the most commonly-used control functions such as power on/off, volume control and play/pause/skip. For example, to turn on the AV receiver in your living room, you just say, 'Alexa, turn on the Living Room.'

The MusicCast skill goes beyond the basics, giving you control of unique MusicCast functions, like linking/unlinking rooms and direct access to playlists and favorites. Programas mac full. In order to access the MusicCast skills, you need to add 'ask MusicCast to' after 'Alexa': for example, 'Alexa, ask MusicCast to link the Living Room to the Kitchen.'

Helpful Tips

– Keep some space between your Echo and your MusicCast speaker or sound bar so Alexa can hear you.
– Familiarize yourself with the complete list of MusicCast Alexa commands. (Click here, then click on 'See All Available Commands.') You'll be surprised at what Alexa can do!
